Rural flight among youth and young adults is one of the most serious threats to the vitality and wellbeing of many communities across the United States. In response to this issue, Youth Entrepreneurship Clinics (YEC) was developed as a place-based educational program to cultivate a sense of connection to community and to help youth gain entrepreneurship skills and business acumen. This session will provide opportunities to learn about the program that brings in-depth engagement between rural youth and local businesses and the best practices of how youth as agents of changes contribute to entrepreneurship ecosystem building and economic development in their communities.

  • Learn the format and see examples of place-based education that utilizes latest startup methodology and technology to nurture entrepreneurial and STEAM skills along with other positive developmental outcomes (e.g., problem solving, sense of connection to others, sense of contribution) among youth
  • Gain ideas of ways to engage broader audiences (e.g., local businesses, community leaders, and schools) to support youth entrepreneurship in their local communities
  • Learn about potential challenges of reverse mentoring (e.g., youth become problem solvers) and tips
